Poll: award-winning offices and houses

Modern houses in a small residential development in the Wola Justowska district as well as an office building in Podgórze are another two candidates for the Professor Janusz Bogdanowski Prize.

It is hard to ignore the neat houses that the Buma Group built in the Królowej Jadwigi street. They represent a modern interpretation of the traditional cuboid form with a gabled roof so typical for Polish construction. The houses, including their roofs, are clad in environmentally-friendly graphite-coloured Trespa panels, which give them a somewhat futuristic expression. Thus the development of this part of the Wola Justowska district has been greatly modernised. The elegant, smooth facades really are a clean break away from the sandstone tiles, all too popular in Krakow, or the variously coloured plaster so fashionable in recent years.

These houses, with garages and gardens, stand in a cosy, gated community at the junction of the Królowej Jadwigi and Pylna St., called Zaułek Onyx. The design is no less bold on the inside. The remarkable architecture of these houses is the result of Buma working with the renowned Krakow architects: nsMoon-Studio. The galvanised steel terraces, glass canopies and external stairs with glass barriers are the product of a design team headed by Krzysztof Dymek. Interior designs are by Signatura. The only possible drawback is the tall fence of tropical timber and limestone behind which the development is hidden. However, the entire concept follows the spirit of the 21st century.

It is worth noting that the load-bearing structure of the houses uses a system of 3D modules already tried and tested in Poland and London. Prefabricated elements can be mass produced and are delivered as a whole to the construction site, where they are assembled into a single house. This assembly looks a bit like building with children’s blocks.

Another interesting building commissioned this year by the Buma Group is the Onyx office building, put forward for this poll by our readers. This interesting facility in the Powstańców Śląskich Ave. - whose style is similar to the Wola Justowska houses - is notable due to its shape and the attention to detail in its construction. It is distinguished by roof terraces in the form of white, glazed slopes.
